Tomorrow is Saturday, and my parents are finally leaving after their unusually long stay. Yes, it was nice to have them around and yes, I'm glad they got over their Manhattan-centric attitudes enough to enjoy the new city, but I really, really, really need a night out.
The problem is that I don't know anybody here, save two fortysomething friends of my parents who have toddlers.
Sure, some Washingtinos have promised to introduce me to their college pals in the area, but I was hoping to wait until they visit me here so it won't be as awkward as it would be looking for someone I've never met in a crowded bar and spending a nervous hour talking about the person we have in common.
So, what to do? I could go to White Castle, which is somewhere on the south side, an homage to a recent potluck dinner, but that's sort of lame without a diverse sidekick and/or Doogie Howser.
I could find a bar, belly up and hope to either get smashed early on, making some buddies in the process, but I'm not the sort of person who meets people at bars.
I could spend the evening reading, gazing wistfully out the window, thinking of everything I've left behind and wondering how long it will take to get up to speed socially.
Eeh, that's more lame than the solo run to White Castle.
The White Castle is on 79th and Stony Island. The drive through there takes a really long time, so it's best to go with company, sorry. The Chicago bar scene is pretty cool. If you're in the mood for really literate company, the U of C philosophy department frequents the Cove on Thursday nights, and the Divinity School crowd heads to Jimmy's Woodlawn Tap, both Hyde Park institutions. My suggestion: go to a Cubs game (as a Sox fan, writing that sentence makes me cringe), sit in the Bleachers, get tanked, and drunkenly pal around.
But...but...but... I'll be starting Northwestern Law in two weeks - aren't we sworn enemies?
once you start law school you'll be making friends left and right. until then, maybe you can get in touch w/ kyle's friend matt (fiftyfivehundred.org)? he and i have been talking a little bit and he seems really nice. otherwise i'd suggest going to some concerts - that's an activity you can do on your own without feeling too weird about it. or the baseball game. and i'll definitely take you out for a drink once i get there - i should be in town the first or second week of september.
and speaking of concerts, i plan on going to the following if you want to go: bloc party sept 14, brendan benson sept 15, sufjan stevens sept 16. that's just the first week i get in town. yay for a city where lots of bands actually tour!
