I celebrate Fitzmas, not Soxukkah

Congrats are due to the White Sox. They swept fair and square in a series of barnburners. Still, I'm not into it. What I am into is the impending indictments coming down any day now from Patrick Fitzgerald. But I'm not at all confident that "Fitzmas" will be a holiday worth celebrating.

Look at the signs: Andy McCarthy at the National Review is vouching for Fitzgerald's credibility, rebutting claims (made by nobody, as far as I can tell) that he's a "tool of the left." There's a limit to how far off the reservation you can go, and providing a clear set of talking points for the other side is way, way beyond that.

Speaking of talking points, look what has been floated by the GOP:

"He's a vile, detestable, moralistic person with no heart and no conscience who believes he's been tapped by God to do very important things," one White House ally said, referring to special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald.

If this doesn't stink to high heaven, then grandpa actually did get my nose back when I was four, disconnecting the olefactory glands that make smelling possible. It's simple: talking points work because they are easy to spout by your defenders and they connect the issue at hand with other things and the attendant value judgements the public holds about them. "Moralistic" and "tapped by God" land squarely on the side of "good things," at least to the people who will go on Meet The Press and Fox News Sunday to make the case for Bush.

This is the opposite of damning with faint praise, it's praising with faint damn.

Why are they setting themselves up to make Fitzgerald look good? Because he's not going to deliver and the administration knows it. Sure, Libby will get thrown to the wolves, but it may not reach higher than that. Rove may come out of this unindicted and if he does, he'll have the talking points ready to go, having been spouted by Democrats all week.
