Since I started TFAL as the Chicago followup to my old blog, it has been a work in progress. I'm wiggling around a bit in terms of content in focus, with a smattering of posts on music, politics, local stuff and, um, seasonal fruit. This ignores the big elephant in my living room and the reason I moved out here: law school. I always mean to write a long post on how school is going, but I always get caught up in, well, schoolwork. I have a whole bunch of little things to do before I leave for Thanksgiving, so I'm driven to procrastination to the point that I'm finally able to bang it out.
The Professors
I have five classes, each with a professor that has a different style. My Contracts prof is about as straightforward as they come, going over cases, tossing out hypotheticals for the class to discuss, showing how Restatement and UCC sections address old common law problems. I appreciate the method, since I know what to expect and I can follow along fairly easily, despite the early hour. As a result of this style, we've covered many more cases in Contracts than in any other class.
My Torts professor is a bit more of a cerebral type. He's a Law and Economics guy, which should be to my advantage, since Economics was my minor in college. The problem is that the theory comes first, then the nuts and bolts, mainly taken care of in supplementary classes and PowerPoints by the TA, who is pretty awesome for a TA. Then again, considering my undergrad experience with TAs, I'm just glad he speaks fluent English.
My Civil Procedure professor is a big shot who jokes about it by mocking his own supposed cockiness. At first I was intimidated by him, but when it was my turn for the ol' Socratic interrogation (it was about Erie R.R. v. Tompkins, for chrissakes!) I found him to be more helpful than scary.
My Criminal Law professor always seems to agree with, or at least be supportive of, nearly every statement made in class. This would drive me batty if the subject wasn't so focused on statute and not common law.
My Legal Writing professor is a stickler for details, to the point of sending out an email about 16 hours before a memo was due specifying the number of lines of text on each page of the document. Sure, it drives me up the wall sometimes, but I can very easily imagine a partner being this specific, so it's probably good practice.
Concentrating
This is by far my biggest problem. I have a computer in front of me at every class, wi-fi waves flying around in every direction, calling me to read blogs, check email and otherwise screw around while important information is being conveyed. I can see the people in front of me surfing as well, but I have a feeling that my problem is worse than normal. I've tried turning off the wireless on my computer, but it only takes a second to switch it back on "to see if someone sent me an important email." I have absolutely no willpower in this department, and I hate myself for it. I wish someone could write a program that turns off wireless for pre-set times each day, only adjustable outside those hours.
Studying
I've said before that everyone here thinks that everyone else is working harder than they are. At least a few of my friends have dropped off the map socially, preferring to put in late hours in the library rather than go out. I for one suffer from diminishing productivity as the hours wear on. I need a little time to blow off steam now and then. When I do run into the always-working people, they've outlined as much as I have. Am I more productive because I take breaks? Are their outlines superior? We'll find out very soon.
Politics
People don't talk that much about politics around here. Perhaps I had a warped idea of campus politics, coming from a fiercely apolitical campus with the expectation that everywhere else was a battlefield. The fact that everyone has their computers with them at all times means that without even trying, I know what everyone else is reading. A surprising number read conservative sites such as the Volokh Conspiracy and National Review Online. The Federalist Society is highly visible, but ACS is coming up as a counterweight. All told, I haven't seen many ideological battles. Maybe the school is too small for debates to get really mean.
