A fistful of bothers
What I have here in my hand is the first 15 or so summer job applications I sent out today, out of about 20. As every law school student knows, firms don't accept 1L summer associate applications until Dec. 1, the worst possible day in the year to worry about printing mailing labels. My first final is Monday. My last class was yesterday. If firms accepted applications started on Jan. 1, everyone would be happier. The people I know in the working world are up to their eyeballs in stuff to do, so I'm willing to bet that my resume won't get opened by then anyway.
Despite the awful timing, at least a half-dozen of my fellow 1Ls (and probably far more) are sending out 150-200 applications today and tomorrow. Others say I shouldn't worry about what classmates are doing.
These days, nothing sets me off more than being told not to worry. Since there haven't been that many assignments, stressing over other people's work levels is the only way I can determine if I'm doing OK. I don't know if I'm sinking or swimming, so I look for proxies with which to approximate grades, and these are the best I can muster.
That being said, sending out 200 resumes may not be such a bad idea if you really want a firm job. Each big firm accepts only a handful of 1Ls each summer. Since nearly everyone limits their job search to certain geographic areas, we can assume that each major firm in a major market (New York, D.C., Chicago, Boston) has 5 openings for 1Ls, and 20 applicants (that's about 8% of the class, a conservative percentage) from my school. Northwestern is #10, and if lawyers are anything like law students, they pay attention to rankings. Assume people in my situation are generally competing with the top 15 ranked schools. As one of the smallest law schools in that group, assuming each other school sends twice as many applicants to each firm. So now you have 580 applications from the nation's top law schools for 5 spots, which is probably a low-ball estimate. With 200 applications, there are, on average, a little less than two jobs. Factor in a few grandsons of senior partners and a few firms that don't hire 1Ls at all, and getting even one offer for all of that envelope licking becomes a not-so-sure bet.
They say I worry too much. I can't imagine why.

You would be applying to K Street firms if you had gone to a top five school. Just have to face reality here: you are not in the same caliber of the student that attends schools like NYU.
