All this talk about the sign of the beast on 6/6/06 makes me wish I still had a soul to sell (sorry Satan, Sally Mae asked first). While I'm not making too big a deal out of it, some people think that superstitious moms-to-be are playing it safe:

[The coming 6/6/06 date] made for a busier-than-usual Monday at some city and suburban hospitals, where women squeezed in their C-sections and labor inductions to avoid the trio of 6's.

"I definitely had more than one person tell me they didn't want it to happen on June 6," said Dr. Scott Pierce, an obstetrician at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and Gottlieb Memorial Hospital in Melrose Park.

Pierce performed a C-section Monday at Gottlieb on one such patient. "She said she wasn't really superstitious but she didn't want her son to be teased about his birthday," he said. "She thought they'd call him Damien or Omen."

Two women gave birth Monday at Alexian Brothers Medical Center because they didn't want their labor induced today.

Sure, any hack worth his salt can string two or three anecdotes into a human-interest "trend" story, but is there really a big fluctuation in birth rates because of the date? After all, most births are not by induction or C-section. As a matter of comparison, let's take a look at another common urban legend: the post-event baby boom. Nine months after a major blizzard or other weather event that keeps people indoors, news crews descend on maternity wards to find, lo and behold, that babies are being born there!

Snopes has done a good job debunking the myth of post-9/11 babies and the 1965 New York City blackout baby boom. It turns out that all of the terror sex hullabaloo was just the result of some freelancer's horny blabbermouth friends making an excuse for continuing their promiscuous ways when everyone was supposed to be serious and either contemplative or angry.

Frankly, I think that the Sun-Times writer got a fairly thorough survey of all the 6/6/06-avoiding moms in Chicago, which is to say, one or two at each hospital. I think most parents realize that either it won't matter (since most people give their birthday as a date not including the year) or that they always run the risk of some disaster taking place on their birthday in the future. After all, I was born on the anniversary of William McKinley's assasination, and I've never been teased about it.
