It was over 60 degrees in New York yesterday, a happy occasion I took advantage of by walking for several miles across a large part of Brooklyn, from Atlantic Avenue to the Gowanus, up past the courts, through DUMBO to Vinegar Hill. By the end of my walk, I was ready to pack it in, so I got on the F train at York Street, believing that the F train still goes where the F train always went.
It doesn't. It hasn't since I was in college, when they introduced the V train, rerouting the trusty F.
It was a sign. When I return to work here full-time, I will have been gone for nine years. I don't know what's cool, I don't dress like everyone else and I can't even find my way home on the subway anymore. Have I really become a mainlander?
