Beer me!

Brooklyn Lager is now available in Chicago!

When I got here, I was excited to try the wide variety of midwestern microbrews: Goose Island (too chemical), Bell's (too hoppy), Great Lakes (too tart) and so on. Sadly, they mostly suck, with Leinenkugel as the major exception. A couple of months after I moved here, I found myself pining for Brooklyn and Yuengling. It took a little while, but like sports success, good beer has followed me.

Here's where you can get this precious nectar:

Initially, River North [Sales & Service] will sell Brooklyn Lager, the company’s flagship brand, as well as Brooklyn Brown Ale and Brooklyn East India Pale Ale. All will be available in 12-ounce bottles and 5- and 15.5-gallon kegs. Consumers can find the brand at several retail outlets including Sam’s Liquor and select Whole Foods location, as well as restaurants including Hopleaf, Silver Cloud, Beer Bistro, Timothy O’Toole’s and Alive One.

Tomorrow, I'm going to Sam's.

you should check out Hopleaf, definitely one of the best bars in town.

Erdinger Weissbier is about $0.70/bottle at my nearest bottleshop, not counting deposit. Remember how eagerly we laid down $7 for a half-liter of that stuff at the Brickskeller? Then again, plenty of clubs over here sell 0.33L Miller Lite bottles for 3.50 EUR when a perfectly good 0.5L bottle of Erdinger or Lowenbrau (approximately "Lervenbroy" - I drove Lisa nuts pronouncing it the American way) is 3.00 EUR.

German law does not allow something to be sold as "Bier" if it contains anything other than water, malt (roasted grain), hops and yeast, so no chemical taste here. I think the Miller Lite was simply listed as "Miller Lite," with no explicit mention that this was indeed "Bier".

I thought Leinie's was one of the better nationally-available beers back in the States, though. Some place at Union Station sold it (along with hot dogs, I think) and a friend who was at Northwestern for undergrad insisted I try it.

Congrats! Now if we could only get it in Georgia!

Yeah, but can't you get Yuengs in GA?
