The death directory

As I packed up to head out of my apartment for the anticlimactic last day of classes this morning, CNN interrupted its wall-to-wall Virginia Tech coverage with a breaking headline: Boris Yeltsin died at the age of 76. After the initial details surrounding its death (because of course we can trust the Interfax report) CNN launched into a well-produced mini-bio, hitting all the high points of the man's life.

Those pictures of the stocky, red-faced man standing in front of the White House (Russian Parliament building) and then, several years later, turning over power in a surprise New Year's announcement, brought me back to my days as a summer intern for an all-news radio station.

During one particularly slow afternoon, I explored the station's audio archives. Amid two-year-old stock market reports and snippets of Food Emporium ads, I found a directory labeled "DEATH." In it were past-tense biographies of every living U.S. President, several foreign leaders (Margaret Thatcher, Yeltsin, etc.) and a few celebrities who looked at the time like they could pass at any moment, like Bob Hope.

The concept of pre-recorded eulogies of the not-yet-dead may be a little morbid, but it clearly makes news sense. So if you find yourself unattended in the office of a newspaper, radio or TV station, poke around a bit and look for the death directory. You may even want to write your own obit and stick it in there, just in case.
