Do any other biglaw summers out there have issues dealing with their secretary/administrative assistant? I've never had anyone under me at a paid job. In my extracurricular ventures, I usually get the underclassmen to work for me by a combination of cajoling, begging, convincing them it's going to be fun and the occasional baseless threat. Now, there's a person nearly twice my age whose job it is to fill out my FedEx slips, get my cab rides reimbursed and generally do the gruntwork that has been the substance of my office experiences before this gig.

She does it with a smile, I thank her, and she goes back to surfing eBay. I can't be the only one with all sorts of class consciousness issues about this whole setup.

Yeah, I find the whole secretary thing a bit intimidating. I never know what to ask her for.

don't know whether to call you hilarious or ridiculous. grow up, treat her with respect, and don't condescend to her and you'll be fine. a secretary can be your most useful best friend in an office setting if you're nice to her.

I've gotta agree with PL. Assistants can be some of the best people in the world, especially when you're genuinely nice to them and they like you. You'll get over the class consciousness soon enough. Plus, overall, I've found that good assistants are often a lot more together than the bosses they work for.

If it helps, just remember she's earning several times more than what you used to earn in DC, and is getting paid to surf eBay. There, that help?

It's not ridiculous, hilarious, nor is it a matter of growing up. Learning to numb yourself to a hierarchy that allows 3 years of brainwashing and torture to equal and earning potential several times that of someone with more work experience then you have years spent alive on planet earth is ridiculous and hilarious. (But let's ignore the dirty-hippie talk.)

I was under the thumb of an asshole trial attorney for over two years. Suggestions: Don't take any negativity out on your secretary - she's not your punching bag. Say something nice or non-work related once in awhile to indicate you are human (spotting literature on her desk,'You read the Economist? So do I! Did you read that article...') Thank her for a job well done (when it's appropriate to do so - empty praise is retarded). If you get perks from the office you can't take advantage of (tickets to games or whatever) consider giving them to her instead of a friend or fellow summer associate. And last but not least, take her out for a nice lunch before the end of the summer.

You do that and you'll be a swell kid to work for.
