I was lucky enough to catch the salient inning of last night's Yankees-Red Sox game while waiting for friends to arrive for a night on the town. I wasn't always a big rivalry guy because during my formative years as a baseball fan, the villains kept on changing from year to year. First, it was the A's, with sluggers like Jose Canseco teeing off on the hapless Yankee pitchers like Andy Hawkins and an impossibly old Tommy John. Then, it was the Mariners, defeating the Yankees in the playoffs after the strike season.

Then, they beat everybody for about half a decade.

But now I'm glad the current rivalry is long-standing and felt equally by both sides. When Red Sox fans talk trash about the Yankees, it usually ends up like this:

Six outs from taking a significant step toward cleaning up the division, and Okajima gives up a homer to Giambi, who's been batting around .100 for the last few weeks and -- best I could gather from listening on MLB radio -- played like a drunken, be-gloved walrus in the field. I don't know about other Sox fans out there, but I pretty much knew it was over at that point; after Damon's double, I wisely left the house for 20 minutes and let the malignancy of the universe take its course.

and winning feels just that much better.
