The Iowa caucuses are on January 3. A flight on January 4 from Des Moines to Manchester, N.H. will take a minimum of 8 hours, require two stops and cost upwards of $1,000. Two weeks later, Iowa-to-New Hampshire traffic will decrease along with the cost, down to about $300. Reporters and low-level advance men operating out of the western part of the stake have it a little easier: Southwest will get you from neighboring Omaha to Manchester the day after the caucuses for $320.
If you work for a primary campaign, numbers dictate that you're probably expending a lot of time and effort on a loser. But even if you don't get picked up by the eventual nominee, you'll still have enough frequent-flier miles to get home.
