This morning, a couple and their baby got on my bus with a stroller nearly the size of a Mini Cooper. They fought their way to the back, banging knees and rubbing slush on everyone's pants as they went by. There were seats up front, but they wanted to sit next to each other instead of across the aisle. When they finally settled in, the stroller, now folded up and about the size of a narrow refrigerator, sat in the middle of the aisle right before the rear door, blocking people in front from using the back door. That meant that anyone in front of them seeking to get off the bus had to squeeze past the Michigan Avenue tourists quizzing the bus driver about whether or not the bus goes to "The Shedd Museum."

I'm all for urban parenting - in fact, I'm a product of it - but you can't just raise a kid in the city the same way you raise a kid in the suburbs. The sort of obliviousness you're allowed when you have your own car, house and backyard is neither possible nor permissible when in the public spaces of a city.

The modern urban competitive uber-parent, as profiled over and over again, has to learn that giving your kid some culture and street-smarts by raising them outside the suburban bubble requires some compromises.

First on the list today is that you can't expect to take the bus and impress the other Lincoln Park mommies with your $1,000 Swedish Infant Transport System. If you can't fit your stroller in the trunk of a taxi, it shouldn't be on a southbound 146.
