Cuba Libre: More than just a cocktail?

Depending on how his brother Raul runs the country, Fidel Castro's retirement is a good thing.

Why aren't I happy? Our Cuba policy for the last half-century has been to send the occasional propaganda broadcast down Havana way while waiting for Fidel to die. He isn't dead yet, but he's too sick to lead the country. It's a dumb strategy, but by definition, it had to work eventually.

What really gets to me is that George W. Bush was the lucky schlub who had it happen on his watch. If this, combined with McCain's perceived ability to win Florida on the strength of seniors alone, allows him the wiggle-room to lift parts of the embargo, he'll get all the credit for "opening" Cuba.

A backup quarterback who comes in at the end of the fourth quarter with a lead and then runs down the clock usually doesn't get credit for the victory. Let's see if the same is true for Cuba and Bush.
