It was inevitable that there would be a push-back to the post- Super Tuesday momentum enjoyed by the Man from Chicago (or Hawaii, or Indonesia, or whatever). It may serve him in the general to weather bad press and non-scandal scandals in the primaries; too bad it's such thin gruel.

There's Obama-won-the-wrong-states-gate. This theory rests on the fact that Obama focused on organizing and winning small states and caucus states and postulates that because he lost big, blue states, he'll lose the general election, just like McGovern in 1972. This primary season came down to delegate math, which favors winning small states over running up margins in big ones. Hillary made a tactical mistake when she essentially conceded most of the Super Tuesday states to Obama in favor of going for broke in friendlier territory. Every poll says Obama does better than Hillary against McCain and nobody in their right mind can argue without breaking down into thunderous guffaws that New York will swing red because their favored Democratic candidate didn't get the nomination.

Next is the "plagiarism-gate" cooked up by Hillary partisans and gleefully repeated by the right. Obama's speechwriters and campaign staff wrote a passage of one of his speeches that sounds superficially like part of a speech given by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, for whom at least of of them worked. It's just so facially nutso that even Fox News pundits are shrugging their shoulders.

Nuttier is the "Cult of Obama" charge. Apparently, getting people excited about your campaign and holding large rallies in states about to vote breaches some sort of pact by which the political process is reserved as the sole province of boring wonks. If someone gets excited enough to join a deafening cheer at a big field house, the specialness of being able to sit through three hours of C-SPAN is devalued. Or something.

Clinton mentioned Chicago skeezeball Tony Rezko at a debate a while back. Apparently, there was a bit of quid from the indicted developer, but no evidence of quo in the Illinois legislature. Just try to find an Illinois politician who hasn't been approached by influence-peddler types. I'll wait. If they say no, they're lying.

In an unscripted interview, Michelle Obama said “for the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country.” She probably should have said that she's never been prouder or some such, but it's hard to imagine Michelle Obama as some sort of anti-American radical, ashamed of her nation, before her husband declared his candidacy. If someone you knew said that same phrase, you would know what they were getting at. As if willful confusion wasn't part of the conservative establishment media playbook.
