It was a little too soon to declare victory for the latte-sipping liberals. Although we are generally thought to be squarely in the Obama camp, the core of the Clinton political machine is not unfamiliar with spending a Sunday afternoon drinking cappuccino downstairs at Politics and Prose while the family Prius sits around the corner on Nebraska Avenue.

Reasonable coffee drinkers can disagree on candidates and issues, but to see attacks on our beverage choices echoed by some of our own is disheartening.

"Hillary is 44" is the presumptuous title of an increasingly shrill blog that many believe is a back-channel to the heart of the Clinton campaign. I have no idea how plugged-in the authors are, but I do know that they aren't supportive of my caffeine-related personal decisions.

Hypocrite Obama supporters and other assorted [progressives in name only] who have not complained, but rather, praised Obama’s trash talk against Democratic values and Democrats were up in arms this week over the remarks by Machinist Union President Tom Buffenbarger.
“Give me a break! I’ve got news for all the latte-drinking, Prius- driving, Birkenstock-wearing, trust fund babies crowding in to hear him speak! This guy won’t last a round against the Republican attack machine. He’s a poet, not a fighter.”

Let's put aside the fact that SEIU, the Teamsters and a whole slew of blue-collar unions have endorsed Obama. Let's also put aside the fact that you don't see all that many African-Americans at Intelligentsia on any given morning. These latte drinkers are Democrats. These Prius drivers will vote for the nominee, assuming that their lifestyle choices aren't mocked by... a bunch of latte drinkers in the Clinton campaign who think it plays well in the sticks.

But Hillary is 44 could be forgiven for spotlighting the views of one union leader. Instead, they took the slur and ran with it:

Obama incense burners were upset at a labor leader denouncing the Obama demographic who have nothing to lose in this election. Bottom line is that the “latte-drinking, Prius-driving, Birkenstock-wearning, trust fund babies” are economically secure enough to survive whatever happens in November.

The “latte-drinking, Prius-driving, Birkenstock-wearning, trust fund babies” are the ones who got us all into the mess we are in when they supported Ralph Nader in 2000.

The “latte-drinking, Prius-driving, Birkenstock-wearning, trust fund babies” gambled with other people’s lives and other people’s money in 2000. In 2008 they are singing the same ol’ kumbaya song.

Let's get our generalities straight. The "Birkenstock wearing" Naderite types aren't Prius drivers. They either drive daddy's hand-me down or they ride bikes with annoying pro-bike bumper stickers wrapped around the frame. Only 2.7 percent of voters picked Nader in 2000, most of whom were in college at the time and never needed much coffee because they slept through most before-noon classes. The latte drinkers voted for Gore. There are around 8,000 Starbucks stores in America, including three within a block of where I will work after graduation. I doubt many of them survive on the patronage of Naderites.

Latte drinkers and Naderites are as different as hipsters and dot-commers. It hurts us from our $60 haircuts to our $150 ergonomic Danish shoes to be confused with those slackers.

It hurts even more to picture someone at his or her computer screen, sipping out of a paper coffee cup with a sleeve made of 80% recycled material, mocking their own. Have some pride!
